| 37th Bengal Studies Conference |
Introduction
It was decided in the millennium Bengal Studies Conference that the 37th Bengal Studies Conference would be held in Bangladesh in 2005. It is a great pleasure to announce that Stamford University, Bangladesh has been selected as Host University for the next 37th Bengal Studies Conference as Stamford has the capability to provide better services and experience to host such a grand conference. President and Vice Chancellor of the university Dr. M. A. Hannan Feroz will be welcoming delegates from different organizations interested in different fields of the Bengali-speaking people of Bangladeshi origin all over the world.
Traditionally Bengal Studies Conference has always been hosted by institution of higher learning in the USA and Canada. It will be hosted for the first time in South Asia by Stamford University, Bangladesh in the almost 38 years history of Bengal Studies Conference.
The unique thing about Bengal Studies Conference is that every year it takes decision at the Conference Business Meeting about the venue and academic sponsorship of the next Bengal Studies Conference. This is the reason why this conference has always been purely academic in form and character for the development of educational and technological sectors in Bangladesh without having any political color whatsoever.
All previous Bengal Studies Conferences were hosted by the following world renowned universities: University of Harvard, University of Columbia, University of Chicago, University of California, University of Duke, University of North Carolina, University of Maryland, University of Georgetown, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, University of Kansas, University of Missouri, University of Pennsylvania, University of Suny New York, University of Wisconsin and University of Toronto (Canada).
A Brief History of Bengal Studies Conference
The idea of a conference on Bengal Studies was first discussed by Rachel R. Vanmeter (Van Baumer), Palph Nicholas and Anjishnu Roy at Michigan State University in 1965. A Bengali colloquium was held that year with the support of William Ross, Director of Asian Studies, and highlighted by the presence of Professor T.W. Clark of London University. Edward Dimock, Jr. of the University of Chicago, guided the Bengal Studies group for many years and the conference has been holding every year since 1965 except one year. Ralph Nicholas took over from Ed Dimock for the last several years. Now Clint Seely has joined him to direct the course of the Bengal Studies Group.
